High peak settlement of Diadema antillarum on different artificial collectors in the Eastern Caribbean

چکیده

The massive die-off of the herbivorous sea urchin Diadema antillarum in 1983 and 1984 resulted phase shifts on Caribbean coral reefs, where macroalgae replaced as most dominant benthic group. Since then, D. recovery has been slow to non-existent reefs. Studying settlement rates can provide insight into mechanisms constraining antillarum, while efficient collectors be used identify locations with high collect settlers for restoration practices. aim this study was compare pre post determine possible peaks Eastern island St. Eustatius. Additionally, we aimed effectiveness reproducibility five different antillarum. around Eustatius highest May, June August low during rest study. Before die-off, recorded Curaçao throughout year characterized by multiple peaks. Even though peak were same order magnitude before overall yearly still lower. As no juvenile or adult observed reefs collectors, it is likely that other factors are hindering island's populations. Of all materials tested, bio ball effective reproducible method monitor settlement. Panels yielded least numbers settlers, which partly explained their position close seabed. Demographic history of Diadema antillarum, a keystone herbivore on Caribbean reefs.

The sea urchin Diadema antillarum was the most important herbivore on Caribbean reefs until 1983, when mass mortality reduced its populations by more than 97%. Knowledge of its past demography is essential to reconstruct reef ecology as it was before human impact, which has been implicated as having caused high pre-mortality Diadema abundance. To determine the history of its population size, we...

Abundance, distribution and size structure of Diadema antillarum (Echinodermata: Diadematidae) in South Eastern Cuban coral reefs.

The 1983-1984 mass mortality event of Diadema antillarum affected more than 93% of the total Caribbean population. Although there are no records about the status of Diadema populations before and after die-off on Cuban reefs, anecdotal information suggests that populations were struck. We analyzed spatial variation in the abundance and size structure of D. antillarum in 22 reefs sites in Jardin...

The Great Diadema antillarum Die-Off: 30 Years Later.

In 1983-1984, the sea urchin Diadema antillarum suffered mass mortality throughout the Caribbean, Florida, and Bermuda. The demise of this herbivore contributed to a phase shift of Caribbean reefs from coral-dominated to alga-dominated communities. A compilation of published data of D. antillarum population densities shows that there has been moderate recovery since 1983, with the highest rates...
